The Reflections of Shangri La

Bahia Shehab

Bahia Shehab is a Lebanese-Egyptian artist, designer and historian. She is an associate professor of design and founder of the graphic design program at The American University in Cairo

“The Reflections of Shangri La” is a two-part series: the first is composed of images drawn from the corners and margins of the artworks on display in the galleries at Shangri La. Often small or overlooked, these images were chosen by Shehab to be blown up to nearly life-size. Their increased status confronts the viewer with their presence, and questions the tolerability of their absence. The mirror invites the viewer to see and imagine herself among this assembled sisterhood. For the second, Shehab selected real and mythical creatures from the artwork in Shangri La’s collection, and Shehab fit the images within two tessellated stars. They are tapestries of the rich myths from the diverse cultures of the Islamic world. Yet, the mirrored, fragmented surfaces on which the stars are printed, suggest a more biting commentary on the perception of these symbols in the West. Shehab challenges the viewers to confront their own biases about “exoticism” when facing these displaced menageries.
