Sherin Guirguis: Artist Talk
Sherin Guirguis
Join artist Sherin Guirguis and Shangri La Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Dr. Leslee Michelsen for an artist's talk discussing Guirguis's two-part exhibition at HoMA and Shangri La, The Conference of the Birds. Based on the eponymous 13th century Persian poem by Farid ud-Din Attar, the exhibition investigates the marginalized and the voiceless through myriad lenses—the endemic birds of the Hawaiian archipelago, of Guirguis's cross-cultural artistic practices, and of Shangri La as a space for thoughtful dialogue on global arts of the present and future. After the discussion, HoMA Associate Director of Learning and Engagement Christine Boutros will lead a Q&A session with the guest speakers and audience.
About the artist: Using site, text, and recovered histories as the core of each series, Guirguis develops projects that engage audiences in a dialogue about power, agency, and social transformation. Her research-based practice is a means to heighten the understanding of marginalized and contested histories, in particular those of women that have often been forgotten and/or erased. Born in Luxor, Egypt, and currently living in Los Angeles, CA, she received her BA from the College of Creative Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara and her MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
This talk will be held at the Honolulu Museum of Art, Doris Duke Theater.
