The Spectres of Shangri La: A Hauntological De-Tour
Abdul-Rehman Malik
Hidden between the spectacular tiles and the remarkable textiles, above the ornate lamps and under the majestic carpets, there are specters and apparitions at Shangri La - hushed stories and whispered tales that say more by their absence than their presence. In partnership with Shangri La, Abdul-Rehman Malik composes an innovative Shangri La experience by releasing the stories of its jinn, by finding the tales hidden in its crevices and by giving voice to the museum’s social, cultural and political quandaries and possibilities. The result will not only be a reckoning with Shangri La’s past but what it tells us about the “Muslim” future.
This program is part of the “What is Muslim Culture?” series developed by Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design and Abdul-Rehman Malik.
