In Search of an Islamic Avant-Garde: Dispatches from the Edge of Muslim Culture
June 21, 2018
From Hip Hop to graffiti, from experimental film to modern dance, contemporary artists continue to push the boundaries of what Muslim or “Islamic” art looks like.
Abdul-Rehman Malik
Abdul-Rehman Malik is an award winning London-based journalist, educator and cultural organizer.
At these new frontiers, where you don't have to be Muslim to create Muslim culture, are we seeing the emergence of an Islamic Avant-Garde - creative activity that causes a genuine “shock of the new”? Abdul-Rehman Malik explores the meaning and impact of an “Islamic Avant-Garde” and how it is changing the way “Muslim-ness,” is being expressed.
This program is part of the “What is Muslim Culture?” series developed by Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design and Abdul-Rehman Malik.
